CAPUCHINS (OFM Cap)

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI
(1182-1226)

... was a man who had a vision, a call to serve the Lord and others. Francis was captivated by the simplicity of the Gospel life of Jesus. He was particularly moved and touched by the example of Jesus, the poor and simple man of Nazareth.

Francis' poverty, joy, and simplicity of life attracted others. In time the numbers grew to such an extent that Francis was soon surrounded by others who shared his vision after the example of Christ in the Gospels. The Franciscan vision and life led to the founding of the Capuchin Order in the 1500s. The 'Caps' as we are often popularly called, number about 13,000 friars in a world-wide family of life and service to the Church.

Our ministry and work in the Church is diverse and varied: parishes, teaching, chaplaincies, preaching, missions, youth work, retreats, justice and peace work, counselling, social work and the like. Our uniqueness comes not from what we do, but from how we do it. We follow the joyful example of the poor and simple Christ, common ordinary men who are brothers to all, and especially to the poor and lowly for whom the Lord has a special love.
